A> My name is Edward John O’Neill but people call me Eddy. I’m from an island called Newfoundland in Eastern Canada. I have been teaching English here in Geochang for over eight years.
A> 저의 이름은 에드워드 존 오닐입니다. 하지만 사람들은 저를 에디라고 불러요. 저는 캐나다 동부의 뉴파운드랜드라는 섬에서 왔어요. 저는 이곳 거창에서 8년 넘게 영어를 가르치고 있어요.
Q> Tell me about what you’re doing for work?
Q> 현재 하고있는 일에 대해서 얘기해주세요.
A> Well, I’m an English Teacher. To go into detail, I am a private Academy teacher. I begin my day with Kindergarten classes,
then I have lunch and continue with Kindergarden. Then I go to My afternoon schedule. I teach elementary through to The evening and then conduct what adult classes I have. It’s a busy life, but rewarding.
A> 음, 저는 영어 선생님이에요. 자세히 말하자면, 저는 학원 선생님입니다. 저는 유치원 수업으로 하루를 시작해서 점심을 먹고 계속 유치원생들과 함께 수업을 하죠. 그러고 나서 오후 스케줄에 갑니다. 저는 저녁까지 초등학생을 가르친 다음 어른들이 하는 수업을 진행해요. 바쁜 생활이지만 보람을 느껴요.
Q> Why did you come to korea?
Q> 한국으로 오게 된 이유는요?
A> Well at the since in 2012, big city life just wasn’t paying off. I had finished my TESOL Oxford night classes and I was ready for a new challenge. I had heard good things about korea and it seemed to be a natural progression. I wanted to be surprised, and I wanted a fresh start. Now hindsight has shown that to have been the fight decision.
A> 2012년 이내로 대도시 생활은 그저 성과를 거두지 못했어요. 저는 TESOL 옥스퍼드 야간수업을 마치고 새로운 도전에 대비했어요. 한국에 대해 좋은 얘기를 들은 적이 있는데 자연스럽게 진행되는 것 같았어요. 저는 놀랍고 새로운 출발을 원했어요. 이제 돌이켜보니 힘든 결정이었네요.
Q> How about living alone in Geochang?
Q> 거창에 혼자서 지내기 어떤가요?
A> Well I have to say living alone in Geochang is very different from in a City, be it in korea or Canada. The city can be a very lonely place and it can be difficult to wake meaningful connections with people. I can happily say that my life so far in Geochang has been quite the opposite. In the eight years I have been here, I have met so many people who have made lasting impressions. I have never been happier nor had such a feeling of fulfillment and accomplishment as I have here.
A> 거창에 혼자 사는 것은 한국에서든 캐나다에서든 도시에서와는 정말 다르다고 말할 수 있어요. 도시는 사람들과 의미 있는 관계를 가지기가 어려워서 정말 외로운 곳이 될 수 있어요. 지금까지 거창 생활은 정반대였다고 기쁘게 말할 수 있어요. 여기에 있는 8년 동안, 지속적인 인상을 남긴 많은 사람들을 만났어요. 저는 지금까지 이곳만큼 행복하고 성취감을 느껴본 적이 없었어요.
Q> Do you have any hobbies?
Q> 취미 활동 하는 것이 있나요?
A> Well, these have varied over the years. I have collected and assembled gandam model kits. I have a collection of fans from various places that has grown over the years and still grows slowly. I also try to exercise regularly at the gym. Two consistent “habits” I have are trying as much of the korean food I can. It is so varied and wonderful. I’m also a bit of a conversationalist and I enjoy entertaining people’s curiosity over food and drink. I also study a little korean from time to time. These may not be “habbies”, but these are the things I can usually be found doing.
A> 음, 취미는 지난 몇 년 동안 다양했어요. 저는 건담 모델 키트를 수집하고 조립도 했죠. 세월이 흘러도 점점 발전해 나가고 있는 여러 지역의 컬렉션을 지금도 모으고 있어요. 또한 체육관에서 규칙적으로 운동을 하려고 노력해요.
두 가지 한결같은 ‘습관’은 한국음식을 많이 먹어 보려고 하는 거예요. 한국음식은 정말 다양하고 훌륭해요. 또한 제가 대화를 좋아하는데 사람들이 관심이 많은 음식과 음료를 즐기는 것을 좋아해요. 그리고 시간 날 때마다 조금씩 한국어를 공부합니다. 제가 말한 것이 “취미”는 아닐 수도 있지만 이런 것들이 제가 평소에 하는 일이에요.
Q> What is the difference between Korean and Canadian education?
Q> 한국 교육과 캐나다 교육의 차이점이 있다면요?
A> Well, this is just my opinion, based on what I’ve seen. Korean Education is more intensive. It also seems to be accelerated. What students study in middle school here, I hadn’t started until I was in high school. Also, these seems to be a lack of lateral mobility. Students get locked into a career path earlier here and can’t alter their path without some setbacks.
A> 이건 제가 본 것에 근거한 제 의견일 뿐입니다. 한국 교육은 더 집중적이며 속도가 빠른 것 같아요. 한국 중학교에서 학생들이 공부하는 것을 저는 고등학교가 되어서야 시작했었어요.
또한 유동성이 부족해 보여요. 학생들이 일찍이 한국 교육으로 진로에 갇혀서 어떤 조치 없이 진로를 바꾸기가 어려운 것 같아요.
Q> Do you have any plans for the future?
Q> 앞으로의 계획은요?
A> The only thing I can say for sure, as the future is neither certain or guaranteed, is that I plan to continue in my efforts at work. Also, when opportunity allows, I plan to continue to do as. I have done by enjoying as much of my life here with the people I know and may come to know in the future. To cultivate a life’s experience. A> 미래가 확실하지도 보장되는 것도 아니지만 내가 확실하게 말할 수 있는 것은 직장에서 나의 활동을 계속해서 계획하는 것이에요. 나에게 기회가 허락된다면, 내가 알고 있는 사람들과 이곳에서 나의 삶을 즐겨왔던 것처럼 계속해서 계획하고 싶어요. 그러면 미래에 대해 알게 될지도 몰라요. 삶의 경험을 구축하는 데 있어서. 지금까지 여기서 저의 생각, 감정, 경험을 이야기할 수 있는 기회를 주셔서 감사합니다.
